About The Bowyer

Frans Hills is the bowyer behind Southern Cross Bows, handcrafting traditional bows in South Africa.

He values the direct connection between archer, bow, and target, and the skill that develops through instinctive shooting over time. For many, archery is more than a pastime. It is both a martial art and a spiritual discipline, rewarding patience, focus, self-control, and continual refinement.

Guided by a belief in simplicity, balance, and craftsmanship, Frans builds bows that feel natural in the hand and dependable in use. Each bow is carefully shaped and finished by hand, with attention to both performance and character.
Every bow Frans creates is shaped not only by skilled hands, but by tools he has personally designed and built. Rather than relying on standard equipment, he crafts specialised hand tools for shaping and refining the bows as he needs them. This allows precise control while keeping a handcrafted feel. From grip contours to limb profiles, these tools refine performance, comfort, and finish.

The most fascinating part of bow making is the time and attention and  precision invested into each piece.
In carving a bow, a tree or piece of hardwood calls. We answer by discovering the bow within its many growth rings. Tillering takes patience and careful observation. The bow is refined many times over until the finished bow reveals itself in our hands.
